Please reflect on your individual portfolio review at ICC. How did this experience help you as an artist? Were the responses to your art what you were expecting or did you get a new perspective/interpretation of your art? Were you able to predict the artwork that they chose, why or why not? (In your reflective response, consider how a fresh set of eyes can give an alternative viewpoint, how can that help you grow as an artist?)
Please include your observations about the show in its entirety. What was the most distinguishable artwork in the show? Was it one of the pieces that won an award (placed)? If not, explain why you think that it was stronger. *Remember to comment on your classes' blog for full credit*

Going in I was extremely nervous for someone other than Banzhoff, Martin, Smith or HB to critique my art. I went in with 4 dark room pieces and 1 done in pastels. My professor was very happy that I enjoyed the darkroom because not many schools still teach this skill. He was also very pleased with the pastels because it was out of comfort zone and I still accomplished what I intended to. The professor that reviewed my art was the one of the digital arts teachers at the school, so he could potentially be my teacher in the coming years. Personally the reviews were not what I was expecting because I didn’t think my art was anything more than average. Looking at my concentration piece it’s not really something that I believe represents what I wanted it to as a whole. All together it reassured me that I was going in the right direction with my art. He told me that I need to do something along the lines of creativity in the future with my job because it shows in my art. I didn’t really know going in what piece they would choose because none of them really had anything special about them. The professor chose my concentration piece because it was darkroom but it looked as if it were a drawing because of how long I left it in the developer. As of right now I am really stuck on my concentration. I don’t really like how they are looking compared to what I want them to say. I also don’t really see how these different techniques are going to improve it because the images are very point blank.

I really like your art work this semester Kayla. Keep up the good work. I've never really done any photography so I can't really help you with that but it all looks cool

Though I've only seen a couple of your photo works, I think you're pretty good at making them look impacting with good composition. I've never really been that great at photography or pastels, but I can still tell that your stuff has been impressive.

I really enjoyed the portfolio review. After doing one earlier last semester, I wasn't particularly afraid of the review, but nonetheless, I found myself surprised with the reception of my pieces. I generally expect to hear a decent lot of criticism and problems with my work, so I know what to improve upon. But... I heard nothing but good things about my work. Especially the work on my sketchbook. I knew I was going to walk out of the review with knowledge of what to improve upon, but the way that this class has made me feel about my sketchbook's work had made me feel like even though I draw on a consistent schedule, that I'm wasting my time.

I think the pieces from your sketchbook are really cool and tell a lot about yourself. The designs are definitely interesting and illustrate a really intriguing story.

Sketchbooks aren't a waste of time at all! Some of my favorite art are from sketchbooks. They are so personal and raw with emotion. At the same time in this class we are creating a portfolio that is to be judged by strangers.

Sadly, I didn't get a chance to attend to the ICC art show because I had to work, and I couldn't get off or have a ride to make it there in time. All though I did go see a representative from SCAD University that went by the name Mo because he actually came to our school to look and visit young starving artist to see if they would like to prolong their artist career, so they can get ready for college and just know what they expect in their work. Well I brought a couple or my art works to see what he would think of them. An right off the back he knew that clay was not my favorite media to use to sculpt. Though he did love the way I layered and painted my piece because the color blended well together and some show through other colors beautifully.

The ICC art review was really fun. The person that judged my art work is also my art history teacher so I didn't have to worry about who I had. She was really nice about it and really liked my all my pieces and decided that my lion was the best pieces. I can't really say I'm surprised because I've gotten that piece into an art show before but what really surprised me was she almost picked my popcorn piece. Martin really liked that piece but i never really saw it. Another teacher came and complimented me on it too, because he liked the color. which made me laugh since you know I'm color blind. I originally wanted to add yellow water color to it so you would be able to tell that it was popcorn a little easier but Martin advised me not to, in her weird "are you sure you want to add yellow?" So i decided not to, and the teacher really liked that. He's a graphic design teacher and liked how you had to look at it for a while before you could tell what it was. Well I think this is long enough for a blog so I'm done. Thanks for reading assuming any of you actually did read all of that

I thought your lion piece was really cool and was very interesting to look at. I also really liked your popcorn piece. It was very cool to look at and I really like the colors you chose for it.

I thought that your lion work was pretty great as well. The colors shone more than a lot of works placed around it. I kinda wish that I had been reviewed by the graphic design teacher though (that's the field I want to go into), instead of the photography teacher, but advice was good overall.

I had done the ICC portfolio before, so I wasn't nervous or anything, just terribly bored waiting in line.

My portfolio review experience was pretty nice overall. It was both enjoyable and helpful to have heard what someone with experience in art had to say about my works, what I did well, and how I could improve. I feel like the comments I received have helped me know what direction to take my work in. I wasn't entirely surprised with the piece chosen, though it perhaps wasn't what I would have picked myself. I didn't feel like it was my strongest work, but as far as composition and color, the reviewer seemed to think it was good. I also got surprising feedback on what techniques to try with watercolor to make it appear nicer than it might otherwise.
